The Ford research laboratory explores mechanisms involved in kidney cell injury in diabetic nephropathy with a specific emphasis on oxidative stress, or cell injury due to the production of damaging compounds called oxygen radicals. Our current understanding of the mechanisms that regulate the initiation and progression of diabetic nephropathy is not sufficient to design effective therapies to prevent or reverse kidney damage.
